Do you feel the heat of Japan's hot summer months? August is already the last month of Japan's summer vacation season, and various kinds of festivals(Matsuri) are held all over Japan. Tohoku area is one of the most-visited destinations during this time when many large local festivals are held. We have selected some festivals that are considered “basic” for those who want to discover the history of Tohoku area in Japan.
1. Aomori Nebuta Festival
Date: August 1 - August 7
Venue: Aomori Prefecture
The epitome of Aomori's summer, the Nebuta Festival is one of the most famous festivals in Japan, attracting thousands of visitors. The main attraction of the Nebuta festival is the flamboyant, dramatic human-shaped floats called Nebuta. Most floats resembling ancient warlords, historical characters, and kabuki characters in the early days.
2. Akita Kanto Festival
Date: August 3 - August 6
Venue: Akita Prefecture
Local people during festival time pray for bountiful harvests with giant lanterns called Kanto, swaying them in the night sky. This festival is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural property with a history spanning about 270 years. The players must receive daily training and a good sense of balance to manipulate.
3. Sendai Tanabata Festival
Date: August 6 - August 8
Venue: local shopping streets in and around Sendai city center, Miyagi prefecture
Sendai Tanabata has always been a traditional event that has continued since the time of Date Masamune, the founder of the feudal clan, and today it is famous all over the country as a festival that combines the elegance of the ancient Japanese star festival with the gorgeous decoration.
